Emergency Department Severity

§ 32.1-137.09 Hospital Emergency Department CPT Code Data Reporting

Pursuant to Virginia Code §32.1-137.09 every hospital in the Commonwealth that includes an emergency department shall report to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) quarterly, for the preceding quarter:

1. the total number of visits to the hospital's emergency department, by location
2. the total number of visits to the hospital's emergency department by emergency department evaluation and management (E/M) Physicians' Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) contracts with Virginia Health Information (VHI) for the compilation, storage, analysis and evaluation of submitted hospital emergency department CPT code data. VDH contracts with VHI to publish a report containing the average number of hospital emergency department visits by location and by emergency department severity code by region and state for each month.
