Licensure and Utilization Data
For nearly thirty years, VHI has gathered licensure and utilization information from healthcare facilities across Virginia, providing trusted, unbiased data as a central resource for the Commonwealth’s Certificate of Public Need (COPN) process. Referenced in Virginia’s State Medical Facilities Plan, these datasets are used by COPN applicants and reviewers to inform consistent, data-driven healthcare planning across the Commonwealth.
Collected annually from over 630 licensed healthcare facilities, this data is organized into comprehensive spreadsheets to ensure transparency and alignment in resource allocation that shape Virginia’s healthcare landscape.
Each Excel workbook includes self-reported information from facilities that perform COPN-reviewable services. Designed for clarity and comparison, these workbooks allow users to view data by facility, planning region or planning district.
To support accurate understanding, each workbook also includes detailed notes and facility demographic information that define data fields and highlight any important caveats to consider.
Workbooks are updated annually and are instantly available for download upon purchase.
Here are 2024’s fiscal year data highlights:
- Cardiac Catheterization: This dataset now includes the volume of procedures performed in addition to the number of patient visits.
- Diagnostic Services: Computed Tomography (CT) information now includes intraoperative CTs and CT simulators.
- Lithotripsy: The volume of procedures performed in addition to the number of patient visits is now included.
- Therapeutic Radiology: This report has been expanded to include the volume of procedures performed in addition to the number of patient visits.
- All Workbooks: “Days in the Reporting Period” is now included on all spreadsheets to bring attention to facilities that reported less than a full year of data, typically due to new ownership. Please note: Since 2024 was a leap year, a value of 366 for “Days in the Reporting Period” is expected.
