It is a FREE and secure electronic registry website available for all adults with a legal residence in the Commonwealth of Virginia which lets other people know the types of medical care you do and do not want in the event you are incapacitated or cannot speak for yourself, acting as a "living will". The Registry is a way to upload and store your wishes once you have them documented and provides a central location for your medical provider, emergency responders, family members and anyone else you grant access to honor those wishes.
An Advance Directive allows you to state your choices for healthcare or to name someone to make those choices for you in the event that you are unable to make those decisions yourself. Fundamentally, it empowers you to say "yes" or "no" to certain important treatment options.
