MRI Scan: Back (2015)

What is an MRI?

The initials MRI stand for magnetic resonance imaging. It's not an x-ray, but an MRI does provide doctors detailed images of parts of the body. MRI machines use pulses of radio frequency and a magnetic field to create a detailed image of a part of the body. MRI units can be tube-like, so patients should talk to their doctor if they are concerned about being in a closed-in space.

Why have an MRI-Back?

Doctors may order a spine or back MRI to find out why the patient has back pain, plan a surgery or see where to inject steroids to reduce back pain.
