Bone Density Scan (2018)

What is a bone density scan?

A bone density scan uses low dose x-rays to measure the density of bones. Bone density tests are painless and require a patient to lay on a table for a short time as a scanner passes over the body.

Why have a bone density scan?

A bone density scan helps a doctor measure bone loss. The more minerals there are in bones, the denser, or stronger, they are. People with dense bones are less likely to break bones during a fall. Bone density scans are recommended for older women and people with osteoporosis, another word for bone loss.
