Arthrocentesis shoulder/hip/knee (2015)

What is arthrocentesis?

Arthrocentesis is a joint tap, which means that the doctor inserts a needle into the shoulder or hip joint to remove fluid. Sometimes, just removing extra fluid can make it easier to move a stiff joint. Other times, doctors order the test so they can examine the fluid to find out why there is pain in the joint.
