13 TIPS FOR A SPOOKY AND SAFE HALLOWEEN

13 Tips for a Safe and Spooky Halloween!

Halloween is an exciting time of the year - for kids and adults! Virginia Health Information compiled some helpful tips to ensure that your Halloween is both spooky AND safe.

1.       Consider glow sticks or flashlights instead of a candle to light your pumpkins. If choosing to use a candle, votive candles are the safest.

2.       When driving, take extra time to look for pedestrians at intersections, on curbs and on medians.

3.       Consider providing "non-food" treats for those that might have food allergies. Teal pumpkins represent food allergy awareness and provide "non-food" treats for trick-or-treaters.

4.       Masks and certain head gear can interfere with vision. Instead, consider face paint or make-up.

5.       Eating a good meal prior to trick-or-treating or parties will discourage children (and adults!) from filling up on Halloween treats.

6.       Plan and review an acceptable route for older children who plan on going without adult supervision. Make sure they carry a fully charged cell phone or walkie-talkie.

7.       Keep homes safe for trick-or-treaters - remove hazardous items that children could trip over such as bikes, toys and garden equipment.

8.       Only approach homes that have a porch light on and remind children to never enter a home or car for a treat.

9.       Always walk on sidewalks or paths. Try to cross the street in groups and on established crosswalks.

10.   Carry glow sticks or flashlights to help you see and be seen by drivers - carry flashlights with fresh batteries to avoid faulty use.

11.   Wait until children are home to sort through and check treats before eating.

12.   Be sure to check curfews in your area to ensure local laws are being obeyed properly.

13.   Don't discourage teenagers who choose to trick-or-treat - it's better they look for treats than for tricks!

We hope you enjoy fun and safe Halloween events this season. Stay healthy, Virginia!
